The suburb of Mufakose near Zimbabwe\u2019s capital Harare has been ravaged by drug abuse and unemployment. Seeking to provide an opportunity for the local community to address these deep-rooted problems, Badminton Association of Zimbabwe organised a one-day AirBadminton tournament which attracted over 100 participants.<\/p>\n
The event was held on 20 September 2024, involving schools, community leaders and the business community. Played outdoors on sand, the tournament had five categories: men\u2019s triples, women\u2019s triples, men\u2019s doubles, women\u2019s doubles, and mixed team relay. Overall, 65 men and 41 women participated.<\/p>\n
The collaboration efforts between Badminton Association of Zimbabwe and the community leaders saw the event being successfully conducted and is expected to be the first step in attracting children in the wider Mufakose area away from dangerous activities. Badminton holds the possibility of weaning children off drugs and on to more positive engagements.<\/p>\n
One of badminton\u2019s biggest assets is that it is accessible to all, including children and community members with disabilities. A number of businesses attended the event in solidarity with the theme to kick drugs out and use badminton as a tool for change.[vc_single_image image=”12806″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Response<\/strong><\/p>\n The community welcomed AirBadminton and believe that it can be a tool for change.
