May 13, 2024

AirBadminton in Hong Kong China has picked up pace in recent times, with several activities being held to attract participants.

As the next step in establishing AirBadminton, the first AirBadminton competition in Hong Kong was held, attracting over 200 participants.

Conducted by AirBadminton Association of Hong Kong, China Limited and the Badminton Association of Hong Kong, China Limited (BAHKC), with the support of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the 2024 Hong Kong AirBadminton Championships (School Division) finals was successfully held on 16 March 2024 at Kowloon Park 7-a-side Football Pitch.

Enthusiastic Response

As the first AirBadminton competition in Hong Kong, it opened a new chapter in the development of badminton in the city. The inaugural event attracted a total of 108 teams, consisting of 57 secondary schools and tertiary institutions, with 216 participants (131 male and 85 female players).

The tournament featured divisions for University, Secondary School Open and Secondary School Junior with nine individual events for men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. The matches followed a best-of-five games format, with each game played to 11 points.

Although the tournament was postponed twice due to rainfall, it did not dampen the participants’ enthusiasm. On the final day, the atmosphere was highly charged, especially in the University Division, where both the finals of the men’s and women’s doubles went to the deciding fifth game.

The technical officials involved played a big role in the success of the tournament. Through umpire workshops and experience days regularly organised by the association, umpires gained a better understanding of the rules of this new sport.

BAHKC hopes to explore more suitable venues in the future to organise larger-scale AirBadminton competitions.

Well-Planned Campaign

To ensure the successful launch of this new sport, BAHKC conducted numerous school visits and demonstrations by Hong Kong, China badminton athletes to promote AirBadminton. Additionally, the organising committee conducted a workshop and trial session for local coaches and umpires two months prior to the competition. This allowed them to familiarise themselves with the rules, regulations, and practical scenarios in AirBadminton.

Fresh Experience

Through this competition, participants were presented with a unique chance to compete against others in an outdoor setting, adding a new level of challenge and excitement to the sport. It also allowed them to showcase their skills and adaptability in different playing conditions.

This event marks a significant milestone in the history of Hong Kong’s badminton development and promotion. It has offered an opportunity for players and regular enthusiasts to engage in the sport, drawing wider participation in playing badminton.
