Category: Medicine and Sports Injuries
Author: Luong, M., Dang, V. & Hanson, C.
Year: 2017
Language: English
Region: Pan America
Source: https://www.canadianjournalofophthalmology.ca/article/S0008-4182(16)31089-4/fulltext
Excerpt: In Canada, sports account for the majority of injuries limiting daily activity in people between the ages of 12 and 64 years. Although most sports injuries are musculoskeletal in nature, sports-related ocular injuries have the potential for significant vision loss and morbidity. Eye trauma, often occurring through physical activity, is the leading cause of noncongenital monocular blindness in children. Blunt trauma accounts for most sports-related eye injuries and, depending on the mechanism of injury, can cause many presentations, including hyphema.

Excerpt: This paper looks at the impact deformation and turnover stability of both feather and synthetic shuttlecocks using a racket based launcher. Flight of a shuttlecock can be described by steady state and unsteady state. Previous works were mainly focused on the steady state flight. While bulk of flight is in the steady state, the transient unsteady state is critical because it determines the initial condition of stabilized flight. The whole phase of rapid angular change during the unsteady state is the turnover process. Impact deformation and turnover response were studied with a racket-based lau

Excerpt: Rapid deceleration is seen in a wide variety of sports when stopping or as a precursor to a change in direction. These rapid changes in velocity often occur over a minimal amount of distance or time and are often in response to external stimuli such as an opponent’s movement or boundary lines. Little attention has been given in the research literature to the kinematics and kinetics of running deceleration. This article aims to enhance the understanding of the mechanical characteristics associated with deceleration performance

Excerpt: Camera techniques are typically used in the study of human movement. However, as the number of joints and markers involved in a study increases, data extraction and calculation become increasingly tedious and complicated. To overcome this challenge, we propose a method of study that simplifies data extraction and calculation by using an electrogoniometer and dual Euler angles. The contribution of the rotation of each arm segment to produce a racket head’s speed was identified in the context of a badminton smash. The contribution of each segment rotation was computed using dual velocity analy
