Inclusivity

Badminton is a sport for all ages and ability levels. Badminton provides both competitive and non-competitive participation opportunities, for children and adults of all abilities, including those with physical and intellectual impairments.

The BWF work with a number of international organisations, including the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and Special Olympics International (SOI) to ensure that the resources and programmes developed by the BWF are accessible and inclusive.

Badminton debuted as a Paralympic sport in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, and is a core sport within the Special Olympics World Games.

The BWF provides a variety of inclusive resources and support, which can be accessed by Continental Confederations, Member Associations, National Paralympic Committees and National Special Olympics Programmes. Support includes the following areas:

  • Coach Development
  • Player Education
  • Equipment Support
  • Research related to Inclusion and Physical & Intellectual Disabilities

Information and strategies on how the BWF aim to provide opportunities for all, as well as developing Para badminton and badminton within Special Olympics environments can be viewed in the 2024-2028 BWF Strategic Plan.

The BWF and SOI are also pleased to outline a specific Global Badminton Development Strategy for 2020 – 2024.
