Excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare the upper extremity kinematics variables of badminton forehand dab shot, stab shot and cross court net shot. The participants were eight elite collegiate male players in Taiwan. The kinematical data were collected by Vicon system (250Hz) and the Visual 3D software was used to analyze the variables. The results indicated that the elite badminton players perfomed dab net shot with less angular velocity in racket upper limb joints. They performed the stab net shot with faster angular velocity in forearm supination and wrist ulnar flexion. The cross court n

Excerpt: The contribution of core neuromuscular control to the dynamic stability of badminton players with and without knee pain during backhand lunges has not been investigated. Accordingly, this study compared the kinematics of the lower extremity, the trunk movement, the muscle activation and the balance performance of knee-injured and knee-uninjured badminton players when performing backhand stroke diagonal lunges. Seventeen participants with chronic knee pain (injured group) and 17 healthy participants (control group) randomly performed two diagonal backhand lunges in the forward and backward dire

Biomechanical analysis of the upper extremity in three different badminton overhead strokes

Excerpt: The purpose of this study is going to analyze the biomechanical variables (net joint forces, moments and powers) on the upper extremities of the international elite badminton player when he was performing different (smash, clear and drop) overhead stroke movements. In this study, we are interested in analyzing from the phase of the period before and after the point of making contact with the shuttle. The 2D inverse dynamical solution was the method to calculate the net force, net moment and the power of the upper extremity around the contact.

Excerpt: The purpose of the present paper is to review biomechanical research carried out over the last thirty years on the execution of badminton power strokes, and to share with the coach important implications of that research. Emphasis is on the forehand and backhand clear and smash. Results emphasize the importance of the rotational movements at the shoulder and radio-ulnar joints. Appropriate coaching cues are devised to assist coaches and players in assessing and improving performance.

Excerpt: Eight world class badminton players competing in the World Badminton Championships in Calgary, Canada participated in the research project. They performed underarm forehand and backhand clears and the high (singles) serve. Performances were recorded on 16 mm film using two LOCAM cameras operating at a film speed of 350 frames per second. Subsequent qualitative analysis revealed that world class players gain a major proportion of power for the underarm forehand clear and the high serve by pronating the forearm and medially rotating the upper arm. Backhand clears are performed using supination o

Excerpt: The goal of sports biomechanics is to study the mechanical functioning of the human system within a sports context in order to understand how to enhance performance and reduce injury. When applied to racket sports (badminton, squash, table tennis and tennis) the topics which have been most frequently addressed in the literature are the analysis of racket skills. The scope of these applications have been influenced by the availability and development of technology and associated computer related analysis methods.

Excerpt: In current badminton competition, the movement of the player is becoming faster and faster. This requires not only basic strength for the basic footwork of players, but also more explosive force in lower limbs which is important for improving moving speed of player on the court. In this study, a method has been developed for the measurement of the propulsive force of one leg during a stride of the elite badminton player. This will provide reference for the training of the badminton player.

Excerpt: Lack of content knowledge (CK) is problematic in teaching in classroom subject areas and in physical education. There is a dearth of data-based research on interventions aimed at helping teachers acquire CK and, in turn, on the effects of CK on student learning. To investigate the effect of professional development, in the form of a CK workshop, on the quality of instruction and student learning. Two beginning middle-school physical education teachers of both genders who had no experience in playing or teaching badminton were purposefully selected. Excerpt: PE in its traditional form involves teaching sport in a way that is mismatched with community sport. Children moving into community sport are not necessarily well placed to fit into this environment following PE experiences. Sport education (SE), developed by Siedentop, illustrates sport as seen and played in organized community sport. The purpose of this article is to see whether SE can successfully change the hierarchy of power in PE to provide a more authentic experience. SE was introduced to two badminton groups (n=24 per group), aged 14–15, over 10 weeks with two one-hour sessions per w

Characteristics of center-of-gravity sway in middle-aged females playing badminton as a lifelong sport

Excerpt: With the aim of providing a basis for the improvement of physical functions needed to perform lifelong sports, this study examined center-of-gravity (CoG) sway in middle-aged females playing badminton on a regular basis. Thirty middle-aged females with experience of playing badminton were divided into 2 groups based on the volume of training per week: high- (HV) and low (LV)- volume groups. The mean ages of the groups were similar (47.7±4.9 and 47.9±4.2, respectively). To record the CoG sway path, each subject stood on a stabilometer (Anima GP-5000) for 30 seconds, adopting 3 positions: stan
