October 17, 2019

The BWF, in partnership with Sports Association for Disabled of Thailand (SPADT) and Badminton Association of Thailand (BAT) hosted a BWF National Level 1 Classifier Workshop and an International Classifier Workshop in conjunction with the Thailand Para-Badminton International in Bangkok.

The National Level 1 Classifier Workshop was delivered from 14 to 16 September 2019 at Xtreme Hotel and at the Huamark Stadium. The workshop was divided into three sessions – Theory, Classification Observation, and On-Court Observation, and conducted by two BWF Senior Classifiers, Dr Syamsul Rizal (Malaysia) and Dr Komwudh Konchalard (Thailand).

The workshop focused on three objectives:

  • Theory of Classification in Para badminton.
  • Minimal Impairment Criteria and their application in Player Evaluation.
  • Observing Player Evaluation under supervision and to identify the stages and the roles of the Classifier in the process.

A total of 18 Classifier trainees from five Member Associations – Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong China, South Africa and United Arab Emirates – participated in the workshop. All participants showed interest and involved themselves in the discussions. With the additional knowledge that they gained, they are eager to contribute to the growth of Para badminton.

“We are happy to see that the workshop has attracted participants from different countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, South Africa and United Arab Emirates. We hope that with the experience and knowledge that the participants gained throughout the workshop, they can go back to their country and start growing the sport of Para badminton.” – By BWF Senior Classifier, Dr Syamsul Rizal.

On 20 and 21 September, a BWF International Classifier Workshop was held at Xtreme Hotel where 15 BWF Senior and International Classifiers had gathered from different countries. The two-day workshop aimed to share the latest updates around Para badminton, discussion of best practice models, standardise quality and consistency of delivery, improve the efficiency of work with BWF, and explain the legal aspect of classification process to all Classifiers.

The workshop was a great initiative from BWF to bring together all the BWF Senior and International Classifiers, and aligned everyone’s objective and role towards raising the bar of Para badminton globally.

“We would like to thank BWF for organising this workshop to bring together all the BWF Senior and International Classifiers. This is a great opportunity for us (classifiers) to keep updated and also to standardise the quality in delivering the classification globally. Looking forward for the continuous effort in growing and achieving the best for the sport we love.” – By BWF Senior Classifier,Dr Shamsul Azhar.
